ChatGPT Search represents one of the most impactful innovations in the search engine world since Google reshaped it in the late 1990s. Alongside AI search startup Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews, it is transforming traditional search engines into comprehensive answer engines.

Earlier this year, OpenAI announced its plans for a search engine, and just last week, it integrated it into ChatGPT for all users. Built on the Microsoft Bing search index, it features a natural language twist that makes finding what you need significantly easier.

I've been using SearchGPT as my default search engine in Chrome for about a week, and I find it increasingly valuable with every use. I'm hoping for a mobile plugin soon so I can switch from Google Search to ChatGPT Search on my iPhone. In the meantime, one workaround is to use the Arc browser and set 'chatgpt.com/?q=%s' as your search engine.

Finding information using SearchGPT is quite different from using Google. It has unique quirks and behaviors that make it stand out from the competition. In fact, I find the experience as distinct from Google as Google was from Lycos and other early search engines that it once disrupted.

1. Be as Specific as Possible

When you ask ChatGPT a question, think of it like constructing a narrative. The more specific details you provide, the better the response will be. For instance, if you’re interested in planning a road trip, make sure to include all the details you can: "What's the best route from Los Angeles to San Francisco that includes scenic stops?" Providing clarity in your queries can make a significant difference in the quality of the responses.

2. Leverage Follow-Up Questions for Contextual Conversations

One of the most compelling features of ChatGPT Search is the ability to engage in an ongoing dialogue. For example, if you initially ask, "What are the best road trip routes in California?" you can follow up with "What about including some famous landmarks?" and ChatGPT will understand that you’re still discussing road trip routes. This contextual understanding allows for seamless back-and-forth interactions, much like continuing a conversation with a friend without needing to restate the topic every time.

3. Start Broad, Then Refine Your Search

It’s perfectly fine to begin with a vague or broad query if you’re unsure of what you’re looking for. You can ask something general, like "Tell me about fun activities in California," and then refine your query as you learn more, such as "What are the best hiking spots in Northern California?" ChatGPT is particularly adept at helping you drill down from a broad topic to a more focused area of interest, guiding you along the way as you refine your curiosity.

4. Utilize Source Citations for Deeper Understanding

ChatGPT Search provides concise, digestible answers but also includes citations to its sources. You might notice a small text bubble next to an answer, which links to the original website from which the information was drawn. Clicking on these links can provide additional details, visuals, or even more nuanced context that enhances your understanding. It’s an excellent way to go beyond the summarized answer and gain a deeper insight into the subject.

5. Request Visuals with ChatGPT

ChatGPT can also assist with finding images to complement your search. You can simply request, "Show me a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge," and ChatGPT will do its best to locate the relevant image. If the result isn’t exactly what you expected, you can use the integrated AI image generator, DALL-E (type @DALL-E), to create the visual representation you need. This flexibility makes it easier to visualize the information you’re searching for.
